Side Effects of Welbutrin
- Insomnia is one of the most commonly reported side effects when taking Wellbutrin. Avoiding caffeine, developing a sleep schedule, and regular exercise may help reduce insomnia. Contact your doctor if insomnia occurs so it can be determined if Wellbutrin or another factor is causing insomnia.
- Dry mouth is another commonly reported side effect of Wellbutrin. If dry mouth occurs, try sipping water, and sucking on ice chips or sugar-free gum. If dry mouth persists, consult with your doctor regarding use of a saliva substitute or other available options.
- Weight loss is a common side effect of Wellbutrin. Subjects taking Wellbutrin were two to three times more likely lose weight compared to a placebo. Wellbutrin should not be prescribed if a history of an eating disorder exists. Discuss any significant changes in weight and appetite with your doctor.
- Dizziness is a less common side effect than insomnia, weight loss, and dry mouth, but is still reported by many who take Wellbutrin (see reference 1). Caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol consumption should be avoided to minimize the risk of developing this side effect. If dizziness persists, contact your doctor immediately.
- Constipation is a potential side effect of Wellbutrin. Drinking six to eight glasses of water per day, switching to a high fiber diet or taking a supplement, and exercising regularly can help prevent and treat constipation. A stool softener can also be considered. If constipation persists, contact your doctor immediately.
- Wellbutrin should not be prescribed to individuals with a history of seizures due to its effect of lowering the seizure threshold. Risk of seizure is dose dependent. GlaxoSmithKline reports that 0.4% of patients taking 300mg of Wellbutrin SR per day had a seizure with a ten-fold increase estimated for dosages exceeding 600mg per day.
