How to Custom Paint Air Ride Tanks

    • 1). Sand the entire surface of the compressed air tank with the 180 grit sandpaper. During the sanding process any manufacturers logos can be completely removed, or protected by masking tape. It is not necessary to remove all of the existing coatings before repainting the tank.

    • 2). Wipe the entire tank exterior with a clean tack cloth to remove all the sanding dust. New paint should be applied to a clean surface.

    • 3). Place the tank on a smooth dry surface. Ambient temperatures should be 70 degrees or higher. Place newspapers or drop cloths under the tank to protect the surrounding surfaces from paint spray.

    • 4). Protect any existing manufacturer's logos with masking tape before starting the painting process.

    • 5). Apply the paint primer from the aerosol spray can with sweeping movements. Apply a light coat of primer until the entire exterior surface is painted. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly.

    • 6). Apply two light coats of finish paint from the aerosol spray cans. Paint should be applied with a sweeping movement from side to side. Do not apply the paint in such a way that it pools, sags or runs down the surface of the tank. A superior paint finish will be obtained with two light coats of paint rather than one heavy coat. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats.

    • 7). Allow the tanks to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before mounting into the vehicle.
