When you are pregnant your body is put under a lot of pressure and experiences a lot of extra demand on its resources, which is why when you are pregnant you must pay careful attention to your health.

Once you are pregnant the best way to get the vitamins and minerals you and your baby needs is to continue to eat a balanced diet.
However, some women will benefit from complementing their diet with supplements.
It is important that you do not simply go out and buy a bunch of supplements again you need the help of a doctor, herbalist or homoeopathic doctor in order to work out what supplements you need and in what doses.
Remember you are dealing with not only your health, but also the long term health of your baby.
Essentially if you are low in certain vitamins and minerals your baby will be too and this will adversely affect their future growth and development.
Perhaps the most important vitamin not to be deficient in during pregnancy is vitamin D.
A lack of this vitamin affects how strong your baby's bones are and there are some indications that a lack of vitamin D can lead to pre-eclampsia and put your child at greater risk of MS or diabetes.
The best way to boost your vitamin D is to get a little more sunlight each day if this is not possible you can buy it in supplement form.
Folic acid is part of the B vitamin family and is very important during pregnancy.
It is a supplement you should take when trying to get pregnant and, if recommended by your GP, during the first trimester of your pregnancy.
You need plenty of calcium during pregnancy to ensure that your baby develops a strong skeleton, teeth, a healthy nervous system and heart.
Again it is best if you get the majority of the calcium you and your baby needs from your diet, but a supplement of 1,000mgs a day may be advised by your doctor.
Whichever supplements your doctor recommends should be brought from a reputable retailer, so that you can be sure they are of high quality and unadulterated by potentially harmful substances.
