Air conditions are a great addition to any home, in particular homes in warmer climates. They do more than just cool the air. In fact, air conditioners actually help to purify and prepare the air entering your home to make it safer for your family to breathe in. Large central AC units will help to circulate air throughout your entire house, and smaller window AC systems will cool and condition specific areas.

    Choose Window or Central AC

    • You will need to decide what type of air conditioner best suits your individual needs. If you are building a new home or office, including a central AC unit will be something to consider. The upfront cost of central air conditioning may scare you, but the lifelong benefits will be well worth it. A central AC system will allow you to set a specific temperature for your entire space. It will automatically turn itself on and off to keep your desired temperature consistent. If you have an existing home or workplace that gets too warm, a window air conditioner may be your best bet. Window AC units are cost effective and can easily keep specific areas cool.

Consider the Size of Your Space

    • If you are purchasing a window AC system, you will need to consider the size of your space versus the size of the air conditioner. Air conditioner size is based on the systems specific BTU. BTU, or British thermal unit, is a measurement of thermal energy. It takes approximately 20 BTU to cool 1 square foot of space. To calculate the amount of BTU it will take to cool your specific area, you simply multiply the square footage by 20.

    Consider Efficiency

    • Energy efficiency is the most important element of air conditioners. All manufacturers are required by law to include the EER (energy efficiency rating) on the AC system. The more efficient the air conditioner, the higher the cost. Do not let the upfront cost be a deciding factor in buying an efficient system. Overtime, the money you will save on electricity bills by purchasing the most efficient system will equal out to and eventually surpass the initial cost.

    Ensure Proper Installation and Maintenance

    • The best option for installing an AC system in your home is to hire a professional. If you would rather do it yourself, make sure to follow all guidelines listed in the instruction manual. Place a room air conditioner in a window that is shaded from the sun. Excess heat will decrease the efficiency of your system. Also be certain to clear away any shrubbery or trees that are near your air conditioner. You will also need to seal the AC unit tightly in the window space. Waterproofing around the unit is also a must. For a central AC system, make sure duct work is installed properly for maximum efficiency. Change air filters monthly, and inspect the system yearly for damage to seals.
