101 15
Regardless of which type of portable generator you own, whether it's electrical, gas powered, or some other, you must know how to operate it safely. A generator is certainly not a toy and can cause harm if you don't take any precautions. Specifically, there are some steps to take to ensure that you avoid getting electrocuted.

Stay Safe

The first tip is that your portable generator should never be plugged into an outlet on a wall. Before putting the generator into use, always read the instruction manual first. Keep in mind that each brand and model can have their own set of rules, so you should know what they are even if you have some experience with portable generators. That chances are good that some differences will exist if you were to compare any two out there.

Another safety precaution for for portable power generators is to never keep any gasoline in your home. It doesn't even matter what reason you may have, gas being stored in your house is a dangerous proposition. Instead, keep it out in a shed if you have one or in any type of storage unit that you have on your property.

If your portable generator has to be connected to the wiring in your home, it's probably best to have an professional do it. The exception to this is if you are actually an electrician or have a great deal of expertise on this process. The point is that this is not something that you want to do unless you really know what you're doing.

As long as you take safety precautions and you connect your portable power generator the right way, then you shouldn't run into any troubles. Use common sense and don't take any unneccesary chances. While all generators come with at minimum a standard one warranty, it might not be a bad idea to extend it a few more years especially if you aren't going to use it much initially. The other reason why you might want to do this is if you spend a lot of money on one and would like to be sure that you are covered for any problems that might arise.
