How to Remove Grime From Your Shower

105 66
There are two ways to remove grime from a shower: the hard way and the easy way.
The Hard Way
Don't have a daily cleaning routine. After every shower, let the grimy water sit on your tile and evaporate, so that body greases and soap scum cakes on. Allow moisture to seep into your grout, leading to microscopic little colonies of mould and bacteria. Allow dirt to dye and color your grout, tile and porcelain.
Then, take a day and go at it with a strong alkaline cleaning solution, a sponge, a scrub brush, CLR, a magic eraser, a grout eraser, the cleaning solution again, and a rinse, in that order.
You might have to deal with bacteria. If your grout was especially grimy or slimy, it is likely hosting some colonies of bacteria. Dissolve sodium borate in extremely hot water, dump it over your tile, give it time to seep in, then scrub. This should kill most micro-organisms. Rinse, dry, and spray your grout with an aerosol grout sealer. Allow it to dry.
If you have mold in your grout that comes back more than once, you should strip and re-lay the tile before it grows into your walls.
Of course, you could also do it the easy way.
The Easy Way
Buy a shower squeegee. Use it to dry off the porcelain, tile and glass after every shower. This might seem time-consuming, but it really isn't (especially compared to the alternative). With a good high quality squeegee you can do a good wipe-down of all your shower's surfaces in a few strokes. Remember that you're not just wiping away water, you are wiping away all the body oil, dirt, and soap that is floating on or emulsified in the water. Squeegees protect grout by not allowing water and particles to seep in, stopping bacterial growth before it starts. They also protect porcelain from discoloration.
You will still have to do a good clean of your shower at least every month. However, it will be much less intensive.
Once a year, it could still be a good idea to scrub your grout with a grout eraser and re-seal it. Depending on your bathtub, you may also want to clean the porcelain with a magic eraser every few months.
However, the amount of time it takes to wipe down your shower after each use, and occasionally clean it, is much, much lower than the time you would spend getting all that caked-on grime and bacteria off every couple of weeks.
