How Do I Know If I Am Eligible for School Lunch Assistance in Texas?
Instructions
1Do you receive food stamps or TANF? If your household already receives such aid, your kids will automatically qualify for the free lunch program in Texas regardless of income. Often these households will receive a letter from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission informing them that they qualify for free school lunch. If no letter has been received, take your HHSC benefit letter directly to the school's nutrition office to become certified for free meals.
2
Do you receive WIC, or Women and Infant Care, benefits? Often these recipients will qualify for free lunch as well, but it is not guaranteed and is dependent upon income.
3
Do you meet the income requirements? The income requirements vary slightly per school district and per year. In the Georgetown Independent School District, for example, a family of three can't earn more than $1,984 a month to qualify for free lunch as of 2010. For a family of six, the monthly income can't exceed $3,200. If your household income exceeds the specified amount, you may still qualify for reduced cost lunch.
4
Are you a homeless, runaway or migrant child? Children, or parents of children, in one of these three categories can contact their school's nutrition office to apply for free lunch.
