How to Connect to Spdf on M-Audio
- 1). Connect two of the S/PDIF cables to the left and right "S/PDIF Output" RCA-type "Input" jacks on the back of the audio device, and the other ends to the left and right "S/PDIF Input" ports on the M-Audio interface. Plug the left channel cable into the left channel on the second device, and the right into the right.
- 2). Plug the other two S/PDIF cables into the left and right "S/PDIF Input" ports on the audio device, and the other ends into the left and right "S/PDIF Input" ports on the M-Audio interface. Keep the cables connected on the same left or right channels between the two machines.
- 3). Connect your M-Audio interface to either the USB or FireWire port on your computer, depending on the model and specifications of the device. Refer to the owner's manual, or the M-Audio support site for documentation on making the appropriate connection to your computer.
- 4). Click on the M-Audio icon located in the bottom-right corner of your desktop to open the user control panel. From here you can specify the interface to use the S/PDIF ports.
- 5). Activate the S/PDIF channels in the user control panel. Place a check in the box next to "Outputs 3 & 4 (S/PDIF and unbalanced)" on the "Bandwidth" tab, then place one in the box directly under it, labeled "S/PDIF Input (stereo). Click "apply" to save the settings, then exit out of the user control panel by hitting "Ok."
- 6). Turn the S/PDIF compatible device's (recorder, ADAT, mixer) power on by hitting the "Power" button. Wait for the device's screen to indicate that it is ready for use before continuing onto the next step.
- 7). Open your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) program, such as Ableton Live, FL Studio or Cubase, by double-clicking on the desktop icon.
- 8). Set the M-Audio sound card interface as the default audio device within the DAW. In Ableton Live, click the "Options" tab, then "Preferences and "Audio," selecting the M-Audio device from the "Audio Device" tab. In FL Studio, click "Options," "Audio Settings," then select the M-Audio device from the "Input/Output" box. In Cubase, click "Devices," "Device Setup," and select the M-Audio interface from the "VST Audio System" box. This process is the same for all versions of these programs.
- 9). Select the S/PDIF inputs and outputs on a audio track by selecting the SPDIF channel from the list. In Ableton Live, make this setting in the "Audio To" and Audio To" boxes on the audio track. In FL Studio, click the "Mixer" icon, then select the SPDIF channels from the "Input" and "Output" channels for the appropriate appropriate audio track. In Cubase, click on an audio track and select the M-Audio device from the "In" and "Out" boxes on the left of the screen. This method also applies to all versions of these programs.
