How do I Successfully Teach About Tithes?
- 1). Use Biblical examples that introduce the purpose of tithing. New church members may not realize that tithing has a long history. Pastors and Bible study teachers should inform members about God's teachings about tithing in the Old Testament, as well as Jesus' and the Apostles' continuation of the tithing emphasis. This helps members realize that tithing, while not required, is an act of faith and obedience to Holy Scriptures.
- 2). The pastor should be careful to avoid making members feel guilty but needs to stress how important tithing is to the life of the church. Most members associate tithing with money. Church leaders should explain that tithing also involves time, dedication and service to the church.
- 3). Teach with practical examples and applications of tithing procedures. This is especially helpful for new members who may be unfamiliar with church operations. This can be taught in a class for new Christians or during the evening service, which is usually less formal. The church treasurer can explain how tithes are used to pay monthly expenses and show members the correct way to submit their payments. That makes it easier for the church to report their total contributions at the end of the year.
