After years of monitoring the facts of how to make sure the women's safety we are still lacking in providing the safe environment. It started right from the beginning with female feticide.
Other crimes includes dowry death, child marriage, all types of domestic violence, rape, sexual harassment, exploitation at work, molestation etc. In the ancient times in India it was a ritual to burn alive the widows with the body of their husband. People called them Sati and they literally worship them. Like this there are other evil customs in the society which still persist.
As per the United Nations report, about 250,000 rapes are recorded worldwide. Although the report covers only 65 countries as in many countries rape cases are not even reported due to the social stigma, fear of being disowned by their families, or subjected to violence which includes honor killing.
In Islam its crime to have pre-marital sex so in case of rape the victim can face the prosecution under these laws if there is no sufficient evidence to prove it. Even the attitude of police is very discouraging towards the reporting of rape cases as many policemen feels that the physical appearance and behaviors of women tempt men to rape. And sadly this mentality is not restricted to just one religion, cast or race.
India witnessed the most horrific gang-rape case of ever lately in December 2012. Nirbhaya, the name given to the girl who was brutally gang raped in a bus which reveals the sorry state of our local transport. Local transportation problem has always been a concerned issue but after the last December rape incident it has become the major safety issue.
Although it is not restricted to one nation but the brutality of the incident shook up the whole world and even terming the Delhi as a rape capital. Local transportation system involves the Metro trains, buses, autos. But due to the lack of govt. control and wide spread corruption it is very difficult to track all the public vehicles plying on the road.
Nearly all women face sexual abuse in public vehicles and even places. In buses due to the absence of police and cameras women became the easy target of sexual harassment and abuse. There are many rape cases reported with the call centre cabs provided by the companies on contractual basis.
Sometimes it's the cab drivers which seriously provided a very complicated situation to handle such crimes. Hostilities against woman is not limited to only streets or households but it also prevails in office work spaces which includes sexual harassment, biased attitude towards the ability of work, abusing gestures, unnecessary leaning or pressing against women etc.
Although there are many legal provisions which provide protection to women, but due to the non-availability of proper control and directives it's very difficult to implement all the safety provisions effectively. So if we want to develop a harmonious and safe environment for women as a society, then we will have to work towards it as a whole unit.
