When to Plant a Garden in Missouri?
- The majority of planting may be conducted during April and harvested until October in all but a few areas of Missouri. Gardeners should check the seed packets to see how long crops take to mature. Most vegetables should be planted no later than June or July.
- Missouri Cooperative Extension recommends setting out tomato plants when daytime temperatures reach at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temperatures do not dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This will usually occur during April.
- Missouri gardeners who plant crops in containers may be able to extend the growing season by a few weeks. Missouri Cooperative Extension recommends bringing these containers inside during the evening and placing them outdoors during the day.
- Plant squash, tomatoes, pumpkins and snap beans until mid-summer. Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprout and cabbage may typically be planted during the month of August in order to be ready for harvest before the first frost.
