Is Raw Plantain Dangerous?
- There is no health danger in eating the plantain raw, but it is not very pleasant in taste or texture. Hard and starchy like a root vegetable, it needs a little cooking to break it down and make it delicious. It is sometimes fried in oil, or even marinated in oil and herbs, and then cooked up as a side dish to meats and other main dishes.
- Plantains are very healthy, containing plenty of vitamins A and C and potassium, and having about 90 calories per 1/2-cup serving. They are also cholesterol free and fat free and high in fiber.
- With a thick and somewhat tough skin, plantains do not peel as easily as a banana. A sharp knife may come in handy for the task. Lop off the top inch or so of the fruit. Score the length of it from top to bottom in quarters. Then peel carefully. Peeling under running water may help prevent bruising.
- It never hurts to use a bit of caution whenever trying out new foods. You may have reactions to some, especially if you already have food allergies. Too much of any good thing may also cause problems like stomach upset or bloating. If you are uncertain about trying raw plantain, try it cooked first and then make your decision. In and of itself, the raw plantain is harmless, though less than palatable.
