How hot does it get in Miami, anyway?

Not as hot as you might think! The hottest month in Miami is, no surprise, August. The average high temperature in August is 89.8 F. The highest temperature ever recorded in Miami was 100 degrees in July 1942.

OK, then, how cold does it get?

Here's the good news. The lowest recorded temperature in Miami is 30 degrees, which has occurred on many dates. The average low temperature in January, our coldest month, is 59.5 F.


How often do hurricanes come?

Even once is too often! Southeast Florida tends to be hit by a hurricane every four years or so. We've had 41 hurricanes during the period 1851-2004. Major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) occur less frequently. We've had 15 during that same time period.

How much does it rain in Miami?

On average, we receive about 60 inches of rain annually.

When does it rain in Miami

Like any city, we have some precipitation most every month, but the wettest months of the year are June, August and September. The driest months are December, January and February.  

Does it ever snow in Miami?

It can indeed snow in Miami, but it's highly unlikely. In fact, it's only happened twice in recorded history. On January 19, 1977, Miami received its first and only recorded snowfall. It only consisted of extremely light flurries, but this Blizzard of 1977 is one of only two times that it's ever snowed in our fair city. The second was on January 9, 2010 when flurries were spotted by trained observers in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
