How to Make Paper Mache With Plaster & Newspaper
- 1). Shred the newspaper and printer paper into thin strips and set them aside. Keep the two kinds of paper separate.
- 2). To make the paste, mix 1 tablespoon of flour and one cup of water in a saucepan. Stir until there are no lumps.
- 3). Put the saucepan on stove, turn the burner to medium heat, and stir constantly while bringing the plaster mixture to a boil. Set it aside and let it cool.
- 4). Spread out a full piece of newspaper or wax paper and place your plaster mold in the center.
- 5). Dip one entire strip of the shredded newspaper into the cool paste mixture. Remove excess paste by pulling the strip through your fingers. Place the strip onto the mold, pressing firmly so there are no gaps or air bubbles.
- 6). Repeat until the entire surface of the base is covered in the first coat of newspaper strips. Repeat three more times until the base has been entirely covered with four coats of newspaper strips.
- 7). If you mold has areas of detail, such as a nose or ears, take a piece of the paper, dip it into the paste, crumple it and shove it tightly into the detail areas.
- 8). Leave the mold on wax paper to dry thoroughly.
- 9). Once the first four layers are completely dry, add four additional layers and allow them to dry. For the final layer, use the white printer paper shreds.
