How to Grow Coreopsis Tinctoria

    • 1). Choose a sunny, warm spot in the garden to grow Coreopsis tinctoria. Although the plant is cold-tolerant, it is a wildflower and flowers best in full sunlight.

    • 2). Remove the weeds from within a two-foot radius of the bed. Add three inches of sand to the bed, and mix it into the top six inches of soil. Rake the soil until it is smooth. Walk across it to lightly pack it.

Scatter the C. tinctoria seeds across the soil in the flower bed. Since these are wildflowers, they are most attractive when grown in a random pattern. The seeds need light to germinate, so don't cover them with soil. If you have a bird problem, scatter a very thin layer of sand over the top of the seeds. Water the area until the top three inches of soil is moist.

    • 3). Allow the top three inches of soil to dry before watering the C. tinctoria. Although the plant is drought-tolerant, consistent irrigation will keep it in bloom.

    • 4). Allow some flowerheads to remain on the plant after the flowering season. The seeds will drop to the soil and germinate the following season.
