Updated March 07, 2014.

For some people who have been diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn seems to occur often when they eat? If you are one of these people who suffer from heartburn whenever you eat certain foods, you may want to consider starting your own GERD diet. First, you will need to know what foods are safe for you to eat, and what foods you need to avoid (those foods that can trigger your heartburn).

You will want to know how to prepare your foods to avoid heartburn-triggering ingredients.

To get you started, check out the resources below. There are charts to show you what can be safe for you to eat and what most often causes heartburn for people. There are heartburn-free recipes. There are also links to sample menus with heartburn-friendly foods that will give you some ideas for meals.

I am a long time GERD patient, having been diagnosed in 1990. When I write about heartburn friendly foods and recipes, and foods that are likely to cause heartburn, I have done a lot of research into what the professionals have found in their research. But I also include information from my own personal experience. In this way you know that what is included below is from someone who has "been there, done that, felt that."

Safe Foods For Heartburn Sufferers
The foods listed in this table are the most common foods that are usually pretty safe for heartburn sufferers to eat. These are the foods that I have found have not caused heartburn for me.

Foods Okay In Moderation
The foods listed in this table are foods that you may be able to enjoy occasionally, in moderation. This means that these foods probably won't cause heartburn if you don't eat too much of it at one time. Or eat it too many days in a row for some people.

Foods To Be Limited
The foods listed in this table are the most common foods that can produce heartburn. I have found that most of these foods will trigger my heartburn. This is because they are foods such as citrus fruits and juices, higher fat content foods, and even chocolate. Bad news for those of us who are chocolate lovers. You can see my blog post on why chocolate can cause heartburn.
