How to Sew a V-Neck Collar

104 24

    Make the V-Neck Facing

    • 1). Spread out a face-up fabric remnant long enough to reach across the back panel's neck edge. Spread an interfacing remnant on top of the fabric remnant. Place the shirt's back panel neck edge on top of the layers.

    • 2). Draw along the back panel's neck edge using the tailor's chalk. Measure and draw a second line two nches below the drawn line using the seam gauge. Cut out the fabric and interfacing layer at the same time, following the drawn lines.

    • 3). Measure from the shoulder seam to the point of the V-neck. Add three inches. Cut two strips, both two inches wide, using the length you just calculated. As an example, if the measurement from shoulder seam to point is 12 inches, cut two strips that are15 inches long by two inches wide.

    • 4). Pin the interfacing to the wrong side of the three remnants. With right sides together, place a straight strip against one end of the neck back piece and pin it down. Pin the other straight strip on the other end.

    • 5). Sew the pinned ends together and remove the pins. If you place the strips against the shirt's neckline, you will see it is the same shape as the neckline and will form a facing to strengthen the V-neck collar.

    • 6). Open out the seams. Iron the seams open and use a zigzag or other finishing stitch to sew all the way around the facing strip.

Sew the Facing to the V-Neck

    • 1). Look at the shirt to make sure it is right side out. Pin the facing piece to the shirt with the right sides together. Line up the shirt's shoulder seams with the seams on the facing strip.

    • 2). Sew around the V-neck, starting three inches from the point, going around the back panel's neck edge, and down the other side. Stop three inches from the point. Remove all the pins.

    • 3). Press the remaining part of the V-neck's point facing into place with your fingertips. Make sure everything is flat and mark a stitching line where the strips meet in the center. Lift the facing away from the shirt while you sew along the drawn lines, making sure the stitches are directly on the lines.

    • 4). Open the seam and press it open with a warm iron. Sew the rest of the neckline's edge to the facing. Clip the seam right at the neckline's point and also at the deepest parts of the neckline's back curves, but without cutting the stitches.

    • 5). Turn the facing to the inside, so it is no longer visible from the outside of the shirt. Top-stitch all the way around the neckline, at least one-quarter inch from the edge. Iron the neckline to make sure the facing stays flat.
