    Farsightedness vs. Nearsightedness

    • Hyperopia and myopia, better known as farsightedness and nearsightedness respectively, are two of the most common eye health problems. People who are farsighted have difficulty seeing things up close, while nearsighted individuals have difficulty seeing things at a distance. If caught early enough, both of these conditions are easily treated and can even be completely corrected with prescription lenses.

    Astigmatism

    • Astigmatism, another common eye health problem, is a result of an irregularly shaped cornea or lens. Blurry or distorted vision is the main symptom of astigmatism. Astigmatism is hereditary, but it can usually be corrected with prescription lenses or eye surgery.

    Pink Eye

    • Pink eye is a term given to the condition known as conjunctivitis. Some forms of conjunctivitis may be contagious, such as those that develop due to a viral or bacterial infection. However, some cases of pink eye are caused strictly by allergens in the air.

    Double Vision

    • Double vision, also known as diplopia, can be caused by a number of factors. Stroke or direct injury to the brain, irregularities with the cornea, dry eyes and cataracts all can cause double vision. Temporary double vision also can be caused by sleepiness, fatigue, and drugs or alcohol.

    Glaucoma

    • Glaucoma involves an immense amount of intraocular pressure, which leads to damage to the optic nerve and rapid loss of vision. The second biggest cause of blindness, glaucoma is often painless and may go unnoticed and untreated for quite some time. Common symptoms of glaucoma include blurry or distorted vision, seeing a halo effect around lights, and nausea.

    Cataracts

    • A cataract is formed when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy. There are three different types of cataracts. Subcapsular cataracts form at the back of the lens, nuclear cataracts form in the center of the lens, and cortical cataracts form in the lens cortex. Cataract surgery is usually required to completely restore the health of your eyes.

    Detached Retina

    • A detached retina means that you are at serious risk of losing some or all of your vision. Spontaneous flashes of light, spots, and dark shadows that aren't really there are all indications that you might have a detached retina.
