Many devices have become very important and indispensable in our daily lives.
This includes the mobile phone devices that we carry around, the big screen television or the internet router.
These also include some devices and equipment used in transportation, medical field and the aviation industry like the air traffic control monitoring.
Each of these devices or equipment has "intelligence" which we refer to as the embedded devices.
Testing embedded devices is a process done to assure the quality and safety of the systems in order to prevent a failure which can be critical.
Transportation systems from airplanes to land vehicles use the embedded devices that it is very critical to ensure that these systems are safe from hacking and make it more reliable.
Testing embedded devices is also critical to assure the high quality and performance of the devices and equipment.
In transportation, the embedded systems maximize efficiency and controls pollution.
One testing tool used is the functional testing, a type of black box testing which identifies the functions that the software was developed for and what it is expected to perform.
The evaluation is conducted in order to assure that the system complies with whatever specified requirements.
The test also verifies that the system is working correctly and it will respond to certain conditions in accordance to its specifications.
Almost all the electronic devices that we have today contain the embedded schemes and if you will just look around, almost everything in the immediate environment is touched by this technology.
The embedded schemes are the very essence of every modern electronic device from the digital watch to the traffic lights, from the control of the air traffic to the control of nuclear plants.
Testing embedded schemes in these industries is critical and a failure in the system is unacceptable as it may lead to serious repercussions.
Considering the factors of safety for some critical embedded systems, the kind of testing done is the MC/DC testing.
MC/DC testing means modified condition/decision coverage is used for the Level A testing.
This testing includes a precise process to make sure that the Level A equipment is safe since a failure in the system will result in a catastrophic failure of the whole system.
Testing safety critical systems are also applied to safety critical software where the failure of the system may cause injury or death to human beings.
The requirements for testing safety critical conditions are so strict in eliminating the bugs to ensure the correctness of the behavior.
