For most holiday makers, a trip to the shores of the lovely island of Menorca is all about sun, sea and relaxation; but therein lies a lost opportunity to explore the lesser known of the Balearic Islands and discover a rich historic past.

If you're landing in Menorca for a stay in the superb resort of Son Bou, holidays are starting off on the right foot already! If you want to find out more about the area's cultural past, the best thing to do is to hire a car and hit the road to investigate parts of the island you may not have considered.

You may well be surprised to learn that Menorca has always had its fair share of visitors - whether the island liked it or not - as it held a key position on the high seas over the course of the last several centuries. Invaders such as the Greeks, the Phoenicians, as well as the British and the French, have all taken a liking to the island over the ages. This rich history is there for all to see in the excellent museums and archaeological sites.

Museu Municipal de Ciutadella

If you visit Ciutadella, you are more than likely to come across this fascinating museum, which gives one of the best insights into Menorca's bloody, but historic past, and the importance it bore through the ages. Once a fortress, it has been converted into a museum that now houses mostly archaeological collections, which include everything from jewellery to skulls.

Museu de Menorca
Even if you spend much of your time relaxing in the wonderful resort of Son Bou, holidays would not be complete without a trip to the largest museum on the island. The former monastery base, in Mahon, houses some of the most interesting elements of its archaeology, while also hosting a collection of fine arts.

Scientific, Literary and Artistic Museum

This site hosts a fascinating account of everything literary to do with the island, including book and authors of Menorca. The museum, located in Cifuentes, is also home to a number of drawing and paintings by Vives Llull.

Museu Dioces de Menorca

For foodies on Son Bou holidays, a trip to the food market that in Ciutadella is a must. But as a side-trip, why not also engage in a gentle appreciation of art at the Museu Dioces de Menorca. Within the museum and gallery there is a fantastic collection of contemporary paintings from renowned Catalan artist Pere Daura, who was born in the area at the end of the 9th century.

Fortress of Isabel II

Those with a sense of adventure could well be in for a treat by exploring the Fortress of Isabel II. Located in Mahon, the fort was initially constructed by the British in the 18th century, but never finished. However, having been handed back to the Spanish in the 1847, it was heavily fortified to repel any further invasions.

Military Museum

The Military Museum, located in the former British-built 18th century Cala Corp barracks, offers visitors a full and uninterrupted meander though the island's military past, with cannons from past centuries and other firing systems located on site.

While Son Bou holidays guarantee a relaxing and pleasurable experience, exploring and delighting in Menorca's rich past will give an added edge of excitement.
