How to Loosen a Rusted Padlock
- 1). Wipe off any dirt or debris from lock with a clean cloth. Lightly buff the lock with a piece of medium-grit sandpaper to get rid of the excess rust.
- 2). Spray a lubricant into the key holes and into the shackle holes. Coat the inside thoroughly. Wait for about 30 minutes to allow the lubricant to seep through the lock bearings.
- 3). Give a few light blows to the lock with a small hammer to break the rust seal. Strike above the lock near the shackle holes but do not hit it hard. Just a couple gentle taps will do. Use the handle to tap at the key opening and the curved shackle.
- 4). Insert the key in the lock and try to turn it. If it resists, jiggle it back and forth a few times. Be gentle and do not break off the key.
- 5). Repeat the steps if unsuccessful the first time. If you are still unable to break the lock free, use a rotary tool, hacksaw or bolt cutters to remove it.
