    • 1). Open any folder on your computer. All folders are managed with Windows Explorer on a personal computer, so opening any folder will suffice for this purpose.

    • 2). Click "Tools."

    • 3). Click "Folder Options."

    • 4). Use the "General" tab to specify how Windows Explorer handles the opening of new folders and directories. You can have directories open in separate windows or keep them all open in one window. You can choose to open directories with two mouse clicks or one mouse click.

    • 5). Use the "View" tab to specify how Windows Explorer handles the content contained in folders and directories. Scroll through the list of options--each one is labeled very literally, so just by reading the name of an option you know what it does. For example, "Show Hidden Files and Folders" displays files and folders that are considered "Hidden" by Windows Explorer. Close through this list and select and deselect the options that you'd like.

    • 6). Use the "Search" tab to modify how Windows Explorer handles searching for documents on your computer. You can specify which hard drives and directories Windows Explorer can search through and which are off-limits.
