Golf Course Applications

103 91
General Please read the section on Goose Management for information on the general approach to keeping areas free of geese.
If you don't prevent the geese from pairing up and nesting in the early spring, they will stay in the immediate nesting area until the goslings have hatched, the adults have regained their flight feathers, and the adults have taught the goslings to fly.
The proper application is critical for success, so be sure to read the How to Apply section carefully.
A GOLF COURSE STRATEGY 1)Determine the specific sites on your course where geese tend to feed.
The number of sites will vary from a few to several depending on course layout and bird pressure.
These sites are usually a small area of the fairway often near water and usually have a high level of droppings.
NOTE: Geese may walk across a green to feed around a green but don't feed on the green - therefore there is no need to spray the green.
2)If the grass is dormant, apply anytime.
If the grass is growing, treat right after mowing to extend treatment.
It should last for several mowings.
3)Treat a site as required to discourage the geese from returning.
In the fall and early spring, when the grass isn't growing, a treatment will last longer.
If you start treatments after the grass is growing you have to treat more often to discourage the geese.
4)A year around program will require 5-7 treatments depending on the number of sites and bird pressure.
The area requiring treatment can often be reduced after the first few treatments.
5)If the geese move to another site, treat that area immediately.
If the geese return to the originally sprayed site, retreat immediately.
6)The total area requiring treatment will usually be a small portion of the course- probably 5-15 acres.
The application rate is one gallon per acre.
7)You can minimize usage by observing conditions daily, particularly early morning and in the evening and reacting quickly.
Often limited treatment of these areas can discourage the geese and be very cost effective.
NOTE: A small flock can damage the turf, leave droppings and require significant cost to repair.
The proper use of Flight Control will provide a cost effective solution.
However, we have had some golf courses decide to treat a larger area routinely to have a goose free course and add $1-2 per round to the green fees to cover the cost of a goose free course.
