Maine has several beauty schools that train students to become licensed cosmetologists. State laws require students to complete a rigorous 1,500-hour cosmetology curriculum and spend a minimum of nine months at an accredited beauty school. When students successfully complete the program, they are eligible to take Maine's State Board of Cosmetology examination. The three-part exam requires students to demonstrate practical and theoretic skills and complete an exam on state laws. After passing the exam, the graduate gets a license and can launch an exciting new career. - Cosmotech School, located just west of Portland in Westbrook, offers a 1,500-hour cosmetology program designed to give students the fundamental skills and techniques required for the state board exam. The curriculum offers instruction and hands-on training for hairdressing, manicuring, facials and aesthetic treatments, as well as communication and management skills needed to run a business. Classes are held in the evenings and on weekends, and most students complete the cosmetology program in two years.
