Manhattan Pedestrian Accident Caused by a Livery Cab Driver
Manhattan personal injuries are not uncommon in this high-traffic, fast-moving city, however this
particular accident was especially heartbreaking as the livery cab driver, apparently driving
erratically, struck an illegally parked minivan, which then struck a truck, pushing the truck onto the
sidewalk and into a young mother pushing a stroller with her twin baby boys.
The young Baltimore family was visiting relatives in the area for the holidays; friends recall they had
seen the mother and her two young babies only days earlier on New Year's Eve. The mother, Patricia
Machutta, had no time to react to the accident which put one of her nine-month old boys in the hospital
with severe head trauma, literally fighting for his young life. The other twin and Ms. Machutta are also
in the hospital with serious injuries, and there is no word as yet on their prognosis.
The Manhattan livery cab driver, Gregorio Patino, was driving for the Azteca Car Service-with a
suspended license, which may cause the cab company some real legal headaches in the coming months.
Patino and his three passengers at the time of the accident were also transported to Lutheran Medical
Center, where they are considered to be in stable condition. Baby Gustavo, the critically injured twin,
was transferred to Cohen Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park.
Pedestrian accidents in Manhattan and surrounding boroughs are responsible for more than half of all
traffic fatalities in the city. The livery cab driver has been charged with aggravated unlicensed
operation and reckless driving following the accident although the incident is still under investigation
by local police.
