How to Replace a Carbon Water Filter

104 8

    Hang on Faucet

    • 1). Place the new filter into a glass of filtered water. This cleans the carbon inside the filter.

    • 2). Locate the slot on the side of the filter housing. In most cases, the slot is located on the right side. In many cases, like with Brita filters, the slot is too big for most flat-head screwdrivers. If this is the case with your filter, use a quarter. It will fit nicely into the slot.

    • 3). Turn the screwdriver or quarter counterclockwise to loosen the filter cap. Expect water to run out of the cap once the seal between the housing and the rubber O-ring is broken.

    • 4). Pull the filter out of the housing. In most cases, the filter will not screw into place; it simply rests inside the housing.

    • 5). Clean the inside of the housing with a clean wet rag to remove any dirt left inside.

    • 6). Remove the new filter from the glass of water and insert it into the housing.

    • 7). Place the cap back onto the housing and turn it clockwise with the screwdriver or quarter to lock it in place.

    • 8). Run the water for approximately 5 minutes to remove any carbon dust from the filter. Also, while the water is running, check the O-ring seal for leaks. If you locate one, tighten the cover tighter with the screwdriver or quarter.

    Under Sink

    • 1). Open the cabinet under your sink and locate the filter housing. In most cases, the housing attaches to the back wall under the sink and will be white or black in color. You will see a copper or white plastic water line and a shut-off valve. You also will see a hose going up into the sink and attach to your purified water tap.

    • 2). Turn off the water supply to the filter by turning the shut-off valve clockwise. If your filter does not have a shut-off valve plumbed into it, you should turn off the main water supply to the house. You will likely locate the water main shut-off valve in the basement.

    • 3). Run the purified water tap until it runs out of water pressure. This makes it safe to remove the cover from the filter housing without getting water everywhere.

    • 4). Locate the canister cover for the filter. In most cases, the cover is located on the top of the housing or in a separate canister located next to the water holding tank. The cover will screw into place or snap into place.

    • 5). Pull the old carbon filter out of the canister and replace it with a new one.

    • 6). Place the cover back onto the filter canister and secure it.

    • 7). Turn on the water shut-off valve and then turn on the purified water tap and let he water run for 5 to10 minutes to clean the filter of any carbon dust.

    Whole House Filters

    • 1). Locate the filtration system for your hose. There are many different kinds of whole house filtration systems. Often, these systems connect to other systems such as UV sterilizers. If necessary, shut off power to all systems. Some systems can be damaged if run without water.

    • 2). Locate and turn off the water supply to the filtration system. If you do not have an in-line shut-off valve for the filtration system, turn off the water main.

    • 3). Turn on a cold water faucet in the home until it loses water pressure. This reduces the pressure in the filtration system.

    • 4). Remove the covers from the filtration canister or canisters. Some systems have multiple filters. Usually, these filters resemble scuba tanks in side and shape, but given the wide variety of filters on the market, yours could look significantly different.

    • 5). Pull the old filters out of the canister and slide the new filters into the canisters. Secure the lids onto the canisters.

    • 6). Turn on the water main and turn on each system one at a time starting with the equipment closest to the water shut-off valve. This allows each unit to fill with water so the water can easily pass to the next unit. Once you have each unit turned back on, run water for approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
