103 27
There you are, standing on the banks of a beautiful river, fishing rod in hand.
You have never been to this river before and you haven't the foggiest idea where to start.
Well, lucky for you fish are usually in the same types of places regardless of the river you are fishing in.
In this article I will focus on where you can fish in smaller rivers and creeks to increase your chances of catching some and having a good time.
Fish have pretty much one thing on their mind, and that is survival.
What does a fish look for when it comes to survival? There are three major things that a fish will look for.
They include shelter, food, and calmer water.
The first two factors are pretty much a no-brainer.
The third one might have you wondering why they would need that.
I will go into each one into more detail and give you some hints as to what to look for.
The first one, shelter, can come in all manners.
Shelter, also called structure, basically provides protection for the fish from larger fish and other predators, including you.
The most obvious structure for some fish are large rocks.
Large rocks can provide protection from the current and if large enough, the fish can hide underneath and around the rock waiting for something to eat to go by.
Another place fish might take shelter is in deep pools.
The deep pools allow the fish to not be seen by predators outside the water.
The water also flows slower through deep pools.
Over hanging trees and bushes can also provide protection and food for fish.
The food would be in the form of insects that fall from the tree.
Also, if the trees fall in the river the fish can hide in the branches.
Why would calmer water make much of a difference for a fish? Well the biggest reason is that the calmer water lets the fish expend less energy.
If it expends less energy, the fish will need less food to eat.
Also, food will have a tendency to collect in areas that have calmer water.
Where can you find calmer water? Pretty much anywhere you find some structure, you can find some calmer water that will hold fish.
Also, where two currents come together can slow down a current or where there is a bend in the river.
Food is an obvious factor for where to find fish.
Food generally comes in the form of insects and smaller fish.
Areas of calm water are the best areas to find food sources for fish.
Also, where smaller creeks flow into the river can be a place fish can find food.
Underneath large rocks is a great place for fish to find their meals.
Armed with this knowledge your next fishing trip to the river should be more successful.
So don't be scared get out there, enjoy nature, and catch some fish.
