How to Install a Second Battery on My Motorcycle

104 12
    • 1). Open the battery compartment. Most batteries fitted to motorcycles are positioned under where you sit and often include space for a second battery.

    • 2). Disconnect the black and red battery cables from the existing battery using a suitably-sized wrench. Move the cable away from battery terminals.

    • 3). Place your second battery next to the existing battery. The second battery must be the same type and produce the same voltage as your existing battery. For example if your existing battery produces 6 volts the second battery must produce 6 volts. Ensure it is securely fitted. Use metal clamps if necessary to attach the batteries to each other, or use elastic ropes that have hooks on each end to wrap around the two batteries.

    • 4). Attach a new battery cable to the negative terminal of your existing battery. The terminal is labeled "Neg." Either squeeze the clamp on the end of the cable using your hand and place it on the terminal and release the pressure, or if the cable has a nut and bolt place the metal ring over the terminal and tighten the nut and bolt using a wrench.

    • 5). Connect the opposite end of the new battery cable to the positive terminal of the second battery using the same method as before. The terminal is labeled "Pos."

    • 6). Connect the red battery cable from your motorcycle to the positive terminal of the existing battery using a wrench. Connect the black battery cable to the negative terminal of the second battery using a wrench.

    • 7). Replace the battery cover. You have installed a second battery on your motorcycle, wired in series to produce double the voltage.
