How to Refinish a Laptop
- 1). Dip a rag into the degreaser and carefully wipe the entire laptop clean.
- 2). Remove any parts of the laptop that you don't wish to paint. Consult the owner's manual for instructions specific to your laptop.
- 3). Cover any remaining areas that you don't wish to paint with low-tack painter's tape. Be exact with the tape. Trim around the rounded edges to create a perfect line with the tape.
- 4). Set the laptop down on a tarp or drop cloth and open the lid. This will allow you to move around the computer to paint the top, the area around the screen and the metal around the keyboard without moving the laptop. Leave the bottom unpainted.
- 5). Spray the entire laptop with primer. Move the spray can back and forth in a steady motion to create a smooth layer. Allow it to dry for two to three hours.
- 6). Spray paint back and forth across the laptop to create a thin, even layer. Allow the paint to dry completely. Look for any dust particles, imperfections or drip marks. Lightly sand the imperfections. Wipe away the sanding dust with a damp rag.
- 7). Apply another coat of paint. After it has dried, sand if necessary. Apply four more coats of paint.
- 8). Using the painting technique, spray two or three coats of clear sealant. Allow the paint and sealant to cure for three days.
- 9). Carefully remove the tape. Use the utility knife to peel up the tape and pull slowly to keep the line between paint and computer sharp. Reassemble any parts that were removed before painting.
