Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are conducted to research the effectiveness of new treatments.
At any one time, there are several prostate cancer clinical trials that are being conducted across the globe.
Many different companies participate in conducting clinical trials.
Companies such as Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, among others, are all conducting or are in a consortium that are conducting prostate cancer clinical trials.
Medical professionals and researchers are dedicated to finding a cure for this type of cancer.
Trials and Findings The National Cancer Institute website provides pages of cancer clinical trial results.
These results are posted for everyone to see.
Some trials have shown that there is no added benefit to receiving annual exams for prostate cancer in terms of mortality rate; however, this trial also showed that receiving an annual prostate cancer exam has led to more diagnoses of prostate cancer.

On February 3, 2009, another prostate clinical trial result showed that adding radiation therapy (RT) to hormone therapy (HT) treatments is more effective on locally advanced prostate than just the hormone therapy alone.
Doctors will now begin to use internal radiation therapy to apply radiation to the affected area directly.
In the past it was thought that taking Vitamin E supplements and Selenium helps to prevent this type of cancer.
However, a recent clinical trial called SELECT (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) that was funded by the National Cancer Institute, showed that there is no significant evidence that Vitamin E or Selenium, taken together or apart, reduce the chances of developing prostate cancer.
Becoming Part of a Clinical Trial Guidelines determine which people are able to take part in clinical trials.
Such guidelines may include being a nonsmoker.
All of these cancer patients can be referred to the organizations that are conducting the prostate clinical trials.
Any physician can refer patients to a clinical trial if that patient falls within the prescribed guidelines for that particular trial.
If you, as a cancer patient, are interested in taking part in a clinical trial, talk to your physician.
You can locate different organizations and prostate clinical trials that are currently being conducted by those organizations by searching the internet and locating the organizations' home pages.
There you will find contact information for that particular prostate cancer clinical trial.
Depending on the trial that is being conducted, you may need only take a pill, go through a procedure like radiation therapy or hormone therapy, and maintain appointments so that the physicians and researchers can monitor your progress.
It may cause pain or discomfort and take some of your time, but that may be a small price to pay for finding a cure for this type of cancer.
