Barenaked Ladies "All In Good Time" Review

Barenaked Ladies newest album entitled "All In Good Time" hit the retail shelves March 30th in the United States. Have you heard their new single "You Run Away"? Probably not, as this album has struggled in the mainstream pop scene in America. However, if you are a hardcore BNL fan like me, you may be excited to see them steer away from their radio friendly music.
This is not to say that the songs on "All in Good Time" are not well written and catchy. In fact, many of the songs are true to their long standing charm fans have adored for years.

Upon a first listen, you may notice something is missing. If you recognized that a beautiful voice was missing from the album, you are absolutely correct. Steven Page, the co-writer/singer for the previous Barenaked Ladies albums was absent. This was due to the decision to part ways as Steve sought after a solo career and to get his life back on track after being charged with marijuana possesion. As sad as it sounds, BNL are a team of four now. However, that allowed the talents of Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Stewart to shine. They had big shoes to fill. But they have filled them quite well. Barenaked Ladies were truly having to reinvent themselves and move on without Steven Page.

My favorite tracks are:
"You Run Away": A solid tune with beautiful arrangements and a great implementation of building a mood as the song progresses. 9/10
"SummerTime": a good old rocking tune with a disco feel. 9.0/10
"Four Seconds": A classic BNL song bringing out the unique charm that fans love. 8.5/10
"On the Lookout":Wow Jim. Nice job. A beautiful song that surprised me. I always knew Jim was one of the best bass players in pop music, but he showed me here that he has a flair to write crafty songs after all. 9/10
"Graffiti Love": a cool song conveying a different message that sounds fresh and appealing to a casual or hardcore listener. 8/10
"How Long":a smooth song with some nice guitar riffs. 7/10

Overal score: 7.0 /10

Reason: The album was solid. However, despite the raw musical talents of Kevin Hearn, I find his songs forgettable. However, it is good to see him express his artistic talent on this album.

As a surprise to some, "All in Good Time" does not mark the end of their career. In fact, they may have set the bar for their next album. Will "All in Good Time" make some new fans? Problably not, but it will keep the current BNL fans happy. Barenaked Ladies showed that they are still able to hit their strides.
