Today's Chennai city was erstwhile Madras city in southern India. This cosmopolitan city serves as state capital city of Tamil Nadu state as its largest city in the region. Location of this famous city on the Bay of Bengal's Coromandel Coast has global rank at 31st position in terms of the largest metropolitan city area.
A city with enriched history, Chennai is a completely modern city now. It remains a prominent urban establishment during the English East India Company period especially in 19th and 20th centuries. Today, this city has become a millennium city in the country which was denoted with the name Madraspatnam in the ancient era. It was part of the Tondaimandalam province in pre-independent era with it being the Kancheepuram's capital.
Modern City With Enriched Past
Today's modern Chennai city has emerged into a metropolitan locality from the Fort St. George British settlement of pre-independent era. It is huge urban settlement in the southern part of the country now that would have been part of the native villages as well as the settlements of European residents nearby the still existing Fort St. George. It was called Madras at that time and remained that until recently.
Many ancient kingdoms ruled Madras from time to time. These kingdoms ruled this area since ancient period. That is why this region remains one of the most historic regions in India. With it being named Madraspatnam, its popularity increased as Madras over several decades. The history does explain that it was actually named Chennai to dedicate Chennapattanam village. Both British dominated €White Town€ and original Indian settlers €Black Town€ nearby Fort St. George became part of erstwhile Madras city which is denoted with modern day Chennai today. Its harbor and trading & business center remains remarkable now like it was popular in the ancient era due to strategic location at the seashore. Portuguese came to Madras during 1522. They built So Tom© at this place. Dutch groups too arrived thereafter during 1612. With arrival of English in 17th century though Madras saw tremendous growth while the city's coast was used for trade and business purposes.
Independent India
With India gaining freedom in 1947, Madras was chosen as a key location for the trade, business and communication from the southern part of the country. This city was further developed and made one of the key urban establishments in the southern part as largest metropolitan city in the region to cater to the needs of huge urban establishments.
The city is oldest one and at the same juncture it boasts as a modern city with its global perspective. Once capital of Madras Presidency, today's Chennai as capital of Tamil Nadu state is famous for being a prominent Indian metropolitan city with its remarkable position on the global levels.
