How to Replace the Brakes on a Saturn Sl1

    Getting to the Brakes

    • 1). Park the car on a level, flat surface and set the parking brake.

    • 2). Use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts on both front tires.

    • 3). Place the floor jack under the front end of the car and lift it by the frame cross-member.

    • 4). Slide jack stands under the A-frame (front suspension) next to each wheel.

    • 5). Lower the car onto the jack stands.

    • 6). Remove the lug nuts and then the front tires.

    Replacing the Brakes

    • 1). Remove the bolts on the back of the disc brake assembly using the ratchet and socket set.

    • 2). Pull the brake assembly straight off the brake rotor.

    • 3). Use the handle of the ratchet to knock the brake pads out of the brake assembly.

    • 4). Slide the new brake pads into the position held by the old brake pads.

    • 5). Replace the brake assembly over the brake rotor, then insert the bolts to hold it in place and tighten them as much as possible using the ratchet and socket set.

    Finishing the Job

    • 1). Repeat the changing process for the other side of the SL1.

    • 2). Set the tires on the axle hubs and evenly screw on the lug nuts until the tires are fully and squarely seated.

    • 3). Jack up the front of the car and remove the jack stands.

    • 4). Lower the car to the ground.

    • 5). Use the tire iron to tighten the lug nuts on all tires of the car.
