In this Step By Step tile installation article we will show you how to install tile countertops: Installing Tile countertops can be done very easily.
There are a few essential tools you will need as well as some basic knowledge of laying out tile.
1) First things first with tile installation, you need to lay out and chalk lines for your tile.
Make sure to layout the tile so you have the largest pieces possible for cuts.
Make sure you start with your bulnose pieces on the edge, because you will want full tiles on all the ends of the countertops if at all possible.
The layout is usually very easy on a countertop.
2) Make sure to apply at least 1/4" backerboard to the top of the countertop wood.
Make sure to thinset and nail down the backerboard, both are necessary for a solid tile installation.
After installing this and chalking out your lines, you are now ready to install the tile on the countertop.
3) Spread thinset in a couple spots of your grid, lay the tile inside the grid and make sure to overhang the bulnose piece in order to allow for your self edge pieces thickness plus thinset, usually around 1/2-5/8 of an inch.
Continue to set all the tile on the countertop then follow by cutting and installing the self edge pieces.
On the selfedge use blue tape to hold the self edge pieces on while they dry, so that they do not fall off.
4) After waiting for around a day for complete curing of the tile, you are ready to grout.
When grouting a countertop there is no need to start anywhere first, just start at one end and continue until you are done.
You will want to caulk between the backsplash and the countertop as well as around the sink, but all other areas should be grouted.
