Job Hunting - Who"s in Your Network

103 318
When you're looking for a job, one of the first steps to take is to contact all the people you know and ask for their help.
It has been said that the average person knows at least 250 people.
If you don't believe that, begin making a list of everyone you know.
For starters, your list may include:  ·        Past coworkers and bosses; ·        Former clients; ·        Current friends and acquaintances; ·        People at your church, synagogue or temple; ·        People on your Christmas list; ·        Your lawyer; ·        Your accountant; ·        Your physicians; ·        Your dentist; ·        Your chiropractor; ·        Your stockbroker; ·        Your financial planner; ·         Professors and teachers; ·         Massage therapists; ·        Barbers and hairdressers; ·        Shop owners and clerks; ·        People in clubs or associations you belong to; ·        People who are taking classes with you; ·        Workout buddies at the gym; ·        People in your volunteer organizations; ·        And yes, your relatives!  Keep your list handy and you'll find yourself thinking of additional people during the next few days (or maybe at two in the morning).
As one new person pops into mind, chances are you'll automatically think of two or three others.
After a few days, count your list; you'll probably be surprised to find you have at least 250 people.
Once you've identified your personal network, create an email or letter that not only lets people know you're looking for your next job, but gives them some information that will help them help you.
Let them know the kind of work you're looking for and any specific criteria you have.
Remember, when you network with one person, you're really potentially networking with that person's network of 250!  Is there a possibility that one of those people might have a contact in your industry? Or know of a job opening just made for you?
