Building an Outdoor Cooking Grill
- 1). Place the jelly roll pan on a flat spot on the ground in a clear area without flammable yard debris. Select a location with at least six feet of space in every direction, including overhead.
- 2). Surround the jelly roll pan with six of the cinder blocks, with their open ends facing up. Place two blocks along each long side of the pan, and one on each short side--as close to the pan and one another as possible.
- 3). Tear up two pages from the black-and-white section of the newspaper and place the strips on the surrounded jelly roll pan. Pour charcoal in a single layer on top of the newspaper strips until the pan is filled.
- 4). Rest the grill grate evenly over the opening between the cinder blocks. Use the two remaining blocks to weigh down the edges of the grate.
- 5). Light the newly built grill by dropping a couple of lit wooden matches through the slats of the grate to ignite the newspaper and charcoal. A wood or cardboard panel can be used as a windbreak for easier ignition on a windy day.
