How to Teach a Dog to Respond to Hand Signals as Well as Voice
- 1). Start by teaching your dog to sit, stay, lay down, rollover, and any other tricks you want him to know; however, while saying the command, you will also need to show the dog a hand signal. Make sure you remember which signal you use for each command. You may want to write them down or save them on your computer so you do not mix them up.
- 2). For example, for sit, you could raise your arm a bit with closed, downward facing fist. Your dog will learn these signals as he learns the voice commands that go with them and will be able to respond to either/or which can come in very handy and looks great in public, too.
- 3). Give a treat when your dog responds correctly and work on the skill every day to keep his responsiveness to your training.
