The industrial revolution and the increasing productivity had slowed down the growth and the quality of arts and crafts, but for some decades now, the scenario has changed and machine-made products no longer attract the people. Presently handicrafts are being considered as vocational media and it is also opted for style statement and the leisure pursuit. Today, the crafts and craftspeople have a vital role to play in modern India – not just as part of its cultural and tradition, but as part of its economic future.

The story of Indian handicrafts and antiques dates back to one of the oldest civilizations of the world. Representing beauty, dignity, form and style, handicrafts from India are objects d'art. The sheer versatility of the various materials used to create handcrafted gift items make them truly unique. Materials range from wood, stone, metal, grass, paper mache and glass, to cane bamboo, textiles, clay, terracotta and ceramic - everything goes into the creation of a masterpiece. Decorative antiques from India are as varied as the people who've called the subcontinent home. That's because Indian objects include Hindu, Islamic, and Colonial sensibilities, to name but a very few. Pre-Mughal-era miniature paintings from Malwa have little in common with gold-threaded Zardozi embroidery or the chased ewers and playing card cases made by Madras silversmiths for British earls and dukes, yet all are distinctly Indian. The Indian handicrafts and antiques industry is highly labour intensive and decentralized, being spread all across the country in rural and urban areas. The sector is considered as the second largest employment-generating sector after agriculture with numerous artisans engaged in craft work on a part-time basis and leading handicrafts and antique gift suppliers providing employment. The handicrafts and antique gift suppliers offer employment to over 6 million artisans, including a large number of women and people from the weaker sections of society.

Today, handicrafts and handcrafted gift items manufactured and exported from India's antiques and handicrafts gifts suppliers are much sought after and have established an unsurpassable reputation in the international market. In March 2014, the exports have shown an increase of US$ 234.33 million i.e. the exports increased by 28.37 per cent over the similar month in 2013. The export figure for 2013-14 stood at US$ 3.8 billion. Exports of Indian handicrafts have grown at a rate of around 7 per cent since 2001–02. India offers an enormous range of handicrafts from each of the states. Major centres in Uttar Pradesh are Moradabad also known as the "Peetalnagari" (City of Brass), Saharanpur for its wooden articles, Ferozabad for Glass. The North Western state of Rajasthan has to offer the famous Jaipuri quilts, Bagru and Sanganer printed textiles and wooden and wrought iron furniture from Jodhpur. The coastal state of Gujarat comes with embroidered articles from Kutch. Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh is famous for its Lace and Lace goods. But this is only a small part of the total product range. India offers much more.
