DVD Pick: Good Night, and Good Luck
< Continued from page 1
Only Two DVD Extras, but Both Are Worthwhile
The Good Night, and Good Luck DVD contains an audio commentary track, which mostly features co-writer/director George Clooney, although co-writer/producer Grant Heslov is heard from as well. Clooney talks about his thinking in making the movie; for example, he mentions films that influenced him, such as 12 Angry Men (1957) and Fail-Safe (1964). He also sometimes comments on the content in Good Night, and Good Luck; for instance, Clooney says that President Eisenhower's "only real, true public shot at McCarthy" is in the archival footage where Ike cites the Habeas Corpus Act.
But Clooney leavens the serious stuff with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor. I found this commentary lively, informative and entertaining.
The DVD also contains a 15-minute "Companion Piece" to the movie, which is a featurette where various people help us understand the historical context of and the issues raised by the film. Some of these people, including Clooney, Heslov and Strathairn, are movie business types. But I was more interested in hearing from people familiar with the film's subject matter, and these include Joe and Shirley Wershba, Milo Radulovich, Murrow's son and Friendly's son.
