Homemade Music Instruments
- You can use a variety of materials to make your tambourine. Two circular plastic storage container lids fastened together make a sturdy body. If you want to make a quick and easy tambourine, glue two paper plates together. If you have any old Christmas decorations with bells, recycle them to use on the tambourine. If not, a pair of finger cymbals threaded together work just as well. Use a hole punch to make a series of holes around the edge of the disk; here, you can fasten bells or finger cymbals.
- Put colored tape over the holes to decorate and to keep the salt inside.Jupiterimages/Comstock/Getty Images
Clean out some old salt and pepper shakers, and load them with confetti rice. Fill some right up to the top and some halfway; the lighter shakers make a more "rattly" sound, while the nearly full ones make a tighter, more percussive sound. Screw the top back on to keep the confetti rice where it should be: inside. Decorate the exterior with glitter, paint or felt-tip pen. If you don't have confetti rice, substitute sand or gravel. - A comb kazoo requires just a comb, a sheet of tracing paper and a paper clip. Lay the comb down in the center of the paper, and fold the paper in half so it covers the comb. Trim off the excess with a pair of scissors so the paper reaches just shy of the end of the bristles. If you don't have scissors handy, fold the paper again and tear along the crease. Attach a strong paper clip to the center of the side of the comb, leaving the bristles free. Blow across the comb's bristles; the tracing paper will vibrate, making a rather distinctive sound.
- Remove any labels from an old plastic tub of any shape and size. If you used the tub to store food, clean out the interior first. Use a hole punch to create a series of holes along the top of both sides, approximately 1/2 inch from the top. Make a series of holes on the opposite side of the tub. Carve a slot from the top edge of the tub into the hole. Wrap elastic bands around the tub, and slot them into each groove so they sit in the hole. Use bands of different thicknesses for different sounds. As you pluck each band, the sound will resonate inside the tub like a guitar.
