How to Replace GMC Yukon Brake Pads
- 1). Park the Yukon on a paved, level surface.
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels covering the brake pads you are going to replace. The brake pads must be replaced on both sides of the SUV at the same time but do not necessarily need to be replaced on the front and rear wheels simultaneously.
- 3). Place a floor jack under the frame of the Yukon and lift the vehicle high enough to get the jack stands under the frame.
- 4). Place jack stands under the Yukon's frame and lower the SUV onto them.
- 5). Remove the loosened lug nuts then the wheels.
- 1). Loosen the outer set of bolts (away from the axle) on the back of the brake assembly with a ratchet and socket. The default size is 15 mm.
- 2). Remove the inner set of bolts on the back of the brake assembly with the ratchet and socket.
- 3). Pull the brake assembly off of the brake rotor. The brake pads may fall out of the assembly when it is removed from the rotor, depending on the amount of corrosion on the assembly.
- 4). Use the ratchet handle to knock the brake pads towards the center of the assembly and out of the brake pad tracks.
- 5). Insert the new brake pads into the brake pad tracks and press them firmly into place with your thumbs.
- 6). Position the brake assembly over the brake rotor and screw in the bolts holding it in place.
- 7). Tighten the inner set then the outer set of bolts with the ratchet and socket.
- 1). Repeat the replacement process on the other side of the Yukon.
- 2). Remount the wheels onto the axles and screw on the lug nuts with the tire iron.
- 3). Lift the Yukon with the floor jack, remove the jack stands then lower the SUV to the ground.
- 4). Use the tire iron to fully tighten the lug nuts on all of the wheels.
- 5). Put the key in the ignition and fully depress the brake pads to seat them against the brake rotor.
