SVT or Panic Disorder Information
- Supraventricular refers to the the two upper chambers of your heart, meaning "above the ventricles." The rapid heartbeat does not allow your heart muscle to relax and can result in dizziness from insufficient blood to your brain.
- SVT may be caused by atherosclerosis, heart failure, thyroid disease, chronic lung disease, pulmonary emboli, pneumonia, cocaine abuse, alcohol abuse, pericarditis, certain drugs, smoking, excessive consumption of caffeine and emotional stress.
- Along with palpitations, symptoms of a panic attack can include chest pain, hot flashes or chills, stomach upset, terror, fear of losing control or dying and an urgent need to escape.
- Panic attacks can be caused by an anxiety disorder and can result in phobias about certain places, particularly if an attack occurred in that location, such as school, shopping or while driving.
- Treatment for SVT involves methods to lower your heart rate by splashing cold water on your face, holding your breath for a few seconds, coughing or tensing your stomach muscles. Treatment for panic attacks usually includes antidepressants.
- Both conditions can be prevented by practicing relaxation techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, and reducing or learning to control stress.
