How to Refinish Formica Counters

    • 1). Clean the counters thoroughly with ammonia-based cleaner. Remove all residue and oils from the surface.

    • 2). Dip a rag into denatured alcohol and rub it over the entire surface. This strips some of the shine from the countertop.

    • 3). Sand the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Do not break through the top layer of the Formica. Sand until you add a small amount of texture on the Formica surface. Wipe off the sanding dust with a damp rag.

    • 4). Tape the walls and cabinets surround the counter to protect them from paint. Cover cook tops and sinks with plastic sheeting.

    • 5). Pour primer into a paint pan. Dip a trim brush into the primer and prime the edges of the counter. Roll a smooth foam roller through the primer. Roll the excess primer off of the roller. Apply primer to the middle of the counter. Choose an oil-based primer formulated for slick surfaces.

    • 6). Paint the counter using the same technique used to apply the primer. Choose oil based paints for better durability. Apply two thin coats of paint. Allow the first coat to dry for four hours before applying the second. Let the paint cure for seven days before using the counter.
