How to Build a Dog House for Puppies
- 1). Secure the lid to the extra large sturdy tub and turn it upside down using the lid as a bottom to the dog compartment.
- 2). With a ruler and masking tape, mark out the dimension of the size door that you need---depending on the size of the adult dog---to cut out of one end of the plastic tub. Make sure the door size is adequate but not too big so that the entrance area is protected from as much inclement weather as possible.
- 3). Cut the door into the tub and then do the same with the other smaller size tub using a box cutter. Make sure the doors are cut a few inches above the rim that holds the lids firmly. The smaller tub should still be large enough for the dog to maneuver about inside. If it is a large breed, both tubs may need to be extra large or equal in size. Make another door cut into the larger tub on the side of the bigger tub at the opposite end away from the entrance door, the second cut should be made to line up with the entrance into the smaller tub. Essentially, the tubs will line up to make a "L" shaped dog house once they are properly connected.
- 4). Inside the smaller tub, position soft bedding or a blanket on which the puppies can sleep and stay warm. Inside the bigger tub, position a piece of carpeting or a rug on which the female dog can use if she wishes not to go into the smaller tub area.
- 5). Line the tubs up in the "L" shape position, making sure the tubs are exactly as you want before attaching the tie down mechanism that will secure them to the area that you want the dog house to reside.
- 6). Use the tent stakes and bungee cords to secure the dog house in its location. The number of tent stakes and bungee cords depend on the size of the tubs. Use at least two tie downs for each tub compartment. Once firmly secured to the ground, you will need to apply duct tape over the top and sides where the two tubs meet to avoid any weather from entering where the two sections meet.
- 7). Placing a dog toy or treat inside the main compartment should entice the female dog enough to explore the dog house area. The puppies should soon find the smaller compartment to be more comfortable.
