When they lost their game last Sunday and went down in the Big 12 ratings to position 5, the Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-3) failed to qualify for the Big Bowl Championships. As far as recruit ranking is concerned the team is in position 17. They were waiting to be invited to play in the Insight Bowl games facing Iowa which represents the Big 10 Conference. As it turned out, Missouri was invited instead. However, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have subsequently been invited to play in the Holiday bowl games. Although the Insight and the Holiday Bowl games are in the same category, the give-aways of the Holiday Bowl are bigger.

This year's Holiday Bowl finds the Nebraska Cornhuskers facing Washington University again. They had to win over Washington state to qualify for the bowl. For its part, Washington University needed to humble, California, UCLA and Washington State to be eligible to play the bowl. The last time the Nebraska Cornhuskers played the bowl was when they defeated Arizona by a score of 33-0. This coming game is the third one for them with the Holiday bowl.

On the other hand, the Washington Huskies have done the Holiday Bowl three times too and the last on one was in 2007. The current match is the latest of a series of such matches between the two schools. The eighth and last game was held last September, 2010 when the Nebraska Cornhuskers bested Washington by 35 points, bringing the running score to 4-3-1 in favor of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The two previous games also went to Nebraska. After the Holiday Bowl game, the two teams are scheduled to play each other again this coming season.

The Holiday bowl is required to get teams from PAC-10 and the Big 12 who have at least 6 games to their name. After the BCS, Cotton, Alamo and Insight the Holiday Bowl has the next pick from the Big 12 teams. This year, the BCS Fiesta Bowl selected Oklahoma, the Cotton bowl selected Texas A&M, The Alamo Bowl invited Oklahoma and Insight chose Missouri.

Normally, the same two teams are not made to play in the same bowl consecutively. All the more so if the two had already matched previously in the season, as is the case with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Washington. But because Washington was the last available eligible team, they were forced to do that. Had either the Nebraska Cornhuskers or Washington failed to qualify, the Holiday Bowl would have been forced to get an at-large team, or any team that is eligible and has a minimum of 9 wins to its name. This team is taken from a group of teams in the conference. These have to be included in the highest 14 teams for the season and should have won at least 9 games.

The teams coaches are excited and eager about the re-match just a few months after their last match in September. The teams have become familiar with the tactics of each other that this up-and-coming game promises to have quite a few innovative strategies and surprise moves from both sides of the fence. All in all, despite the somewhat unconventional nature of the match-up, the Holiday Bowl expects a heavy turnout of fans who are eager to see how the 4-3-1 current score favoring the Nebraska Cornhuskers will stand after the game.
