How to Travel to the Florida Keys
- 1). Choose your destination. The Keys are divided into five geographic areas---Key West, Lower Keys, Marathon, Islamorada and Key Largo. The Lower Keys and Islamorada are the least populated islands, followed by Key Largo, Key West and Marathon. Hiking, fishing, biking and snorkeling are available throughout the Keys.
- 2). Choose your transportation. U.S. 1, known as the Overseas Highway, runs the length of the Keys, ending in Key West, making driving the islands possible. Daily flights are available to Marathon and Key West from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Charter flights from Marathon to Islamorada are also available. The Keys Shuttle runs the length of the islands daily from Miami. Ferry service to Key West operates from Fort Myers Beach and Marco Island.
- 3). Relax and enjoy your vacation. Although taxis are available in some areas, if you plan on doing any major sightseeing you will want to rent a car. Car rental is available throughout the islands and at both airports.
