Homecoming is more than about football, or even about school spirit. It's an event which is about all the individual students and how all their quirks and differences create a truly interesting place to go to school. These are the important people who support and cheer for the football team and cheerleading squads and homecoming is a celebration of all of them. - Invite every single member of the student body to sign the parade float for the homecoming parade. Make it clear that everyone in the school contributes to the school spirit. Make a wide variety of markers available, in many colors and metallic shades. Encourage students to sign their names or write an encouraging or celebratory message somewhere on the float. If desired, let students draw picture messages and express themselves in that manner.
- Make your float visible from far away by constructing an arch made out of balloons over the top of it. Select balloons in your school colors and tape them together so that they form a long row that is four balloons wide and approximately 30 balloons long. Adhere it to either side of your float so that it creates a half circle over the top of your float. This will give the impression of a balloon rainbow in your school colors and is a guaranteed way to make your float stand out.
- A larger than life sized version of your school mascot is one way to create an eye-catching display on your homecoming float. In fact, even the act of constructing this decoration will cause members of the student body to bond. Make an enormous paper-mache figure of your mascot using extra-large balloons. Cover the balloons in strips of newspaper saturated with a flour and water mixture, and give them each a day to dry. Once each structure has dried, pop the internal balloons, and cut and position the paper-mache parts so that they begin to resemble your school mascot. Glue them into place and paint them in the appropriate school colors. Before the paint dries, cover the mascot with colored glitter so the finished result is truly eye-catching.
