How to Change a Transmission Pan
- 1). Locate the transmission's pan. The pan is located on the bottom of the transmission and is typically square in shape.
- 2). Place a container underneath the transmission's pan that is suitable for capturing transmission fluid.
- 3). Loosen each of the transmission pan's bolts with a wrench. These bolts are located around the entire circumference of the pan. Take care not to remove the bolts at this point.
- 4). Pry the pan loose from the transmission by first wedging a flat head screwdriver between the pan and the transmission, then by twisting the screwdriver. Doing so will break the pan's gasket away from the transmission and allow the majority of the transmission's fluid to drain into the container.
- 5). Remove the transmission pan's bolts to remove the pan.
- 6). Clean the outer lip of the pan and the pan's mating surface on the transmission with a gasket scraper to ensure that the pan and the mating surfaces are free from old gasket material and other deposits.
- 7). Coat one side of a new pan gasket with gasket sealer, then place the side of the gasket with the gasket sealer against the lip of the pan.
- 8). Coat the other side of the pan's gasket with gasket sealer.
- 9). Hold the pan against the bottom of the transmission, then install each of the pan's bolts through the pan and into the transmission. Tighten each both with a wrench to secure the pan in place to complete the replacement process.
