Sierra Hoyle Board Games
- Sierra's "Hoyle Board Games" 2001 Edition CD-ROM (released in 2000) contains 16 games in all, like "Chess," "Backgammon," and a version of "Connect Four." Players are prompted to use "Facemaker" at the start. The tool lets you design you own avatar, who will represent you at the gaming tables. The game has its own set of virtual opponents who make comments throughout the game, some of which would give you clues as to how you were doing against them. Hoyle's package wasn't all board games; and included a version of the arcade game "Bust-A-Move" called "Placer Racer."
- In 2002, the Hoyle game package had 18 games, including "Battling Ships" (which is a lot like "Battleship"). The CD also contained some staple games like "Chess," "Checkers," "Dominoes" and "Mahjong." Sierra added some of its own games too, including the matching game "Gravity Tiles," and the word games "Wordox" and "Double Cross." The 2002 edition also includes a "Facemaker" tool and more interactive characters.
- The 2003 iteration included 18 games in all. It introduced new games like "Bump 'em," "T-Rex," or "Rummy Squares." "Bump 'em" is a version of the board game "Sorry," with the human player and his Facemaker Avatar competing against three of the game's chatty characters. The characters range from annoying humans to a dinosaur, a bear, a pirate's parrot and an alien. Each one has a set of random comments exclusive to his character and to the particular game you're playing.
- The 2005 game has 17 tabletop games, as well as the Sierra-made additions like "Placer Racer" a puzzle game with action elements, or "Rummy Tiles." It also includes a digital pool table with 12 different games, the Facemaker, and "Hoyle Bucks." With enough wins, the player could earn enough Hoyle bucks to buy new backgrounds and musical tracks. The 2005 game also has a "revenge" feature to confront the mouthy playmates. For example, during Chinese checkers, the alien character Roswell might brag about a good move of his with "I'm jumping more than Carl Lewis!" The player can click an on-screen button that will make a pie or boxing glove hit Roswell in revenge. Or, if the player is using the Facemaker feature, the revenge button may make the avatar deliver a verbal retort like "Roswell, you're about due for another alien autopsy."
