In 1997, researchers tested a long-standing theory that someone could have hidden in the storm drain, shot President Kennedy, and escaped under the city. They proved that an adult man with a rifle could crawl through the drain, under Elm Street, and emerge about a half mile away. In an episode of the X-Files, this was how the Smoking Man did it. Today, the drains on either side of Elm are wired over and sandbagged to prevent unauthorized research.
